"At the start of lovemaking
Stay with the fires in the beginning
And in so doing
Avoid the embers at the end"

- Shiva in the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra

This talk is an introduction to some of the basic principles of Tantric Yoga. Tantric Yoga is a path to spiritual liberation that employs yogic understandings of the subtle body to all areas of life, including our sexuality. The focus in this workshop will be on the yogic approach to cultivating sexual fire.

Our sexual energy, when it is uncultivated, comes out as a red flame that burns with the excitement of genital orgasm, but the flame also dies with orgasm. But it is possible to cultivate this flame through awareness. Then it becomes a rippling blue flame that courses through your whole body and over your skin. This experience is what I call kundalini orgasm, the subtle but continuous awakening of your vital life force.

Some themes that will be addressed in this talk are:
  • how to open the flow of sexual energy
  • creating a connection between heart and sex
  • the subtle energy flows of sexual energy up the body
  • what is kundalini orgasm and how it awakens
  • how to cultivate sexual energy using
  • subtle movement,
  • relaxation,
  • breath and
  • awareness

About Shakti Malan (Ph.D.)

shakti 1.jpg
Shakti is a dakini (teacher of the mystery traditions of Tantra) and member of the Advait Tantraschool (tantraschool.co.za). She has a busy practice involving sessions, workshops, courses and retreats. Shakti is based in Cape Town and has been teaching internationally in the UK and the US. Her central approach is to enter the totality of experience as a gateway to awakening. Shakti believes that sexuality is the field which most powerfully directs us to this gateway. For more on her work, see www.shakti.co.za and www.totalitytherapy.com

Shakti is a woman who has always had a deep sense of calling, which first she explored in the development field working with township communities all across South Africa. Through this work she attained a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology, a discipline that teaches the practitioner to listen to the reality of groups and individuals from an insider perspective, through immersion in the texture of their lives.

Following from many years of devotion to meditation, tai chi, yoga and shamanic work, Shakti had a sudden and profound redirection of her energy into the field of Tantra. This started at the age of 33 with 18 months of death processing in the wilderness, and then a long period of intense work with the Advaita tradition of non-duality, as well as deep personal emotional processing.

Her style of teaching is influenced by Advaita teachings in general and specifically Advait Tantra, shamanism (most poignantly African shamanic traditions), systemic and processwork psychology, her intellectual training as a Social Anthropologist and also her work as a dance and movement teacher.

Shakti in California June 2011

Dear friends,

I am visiting California this year June - July and look forward to seeing you during that time. My full programme can be found on erotic-spirituality.com. You will see that I have several shorter events - some for free or at minimal cost. I am also available for private sessions on specific days. My time in California culminates in a three day Totality Therapy Training programme for practitioners and serious students of consciousness. Here is a summary of what is available. Follow the links below for more details and to register.

The Subtle Energy of Eros

Oakland; 6/18/11

3.30 - 6 pm (- FREE !)

snake lady.jpg
Eros (our erotic impulse) is a guide to Gnosis (deeper wisdom or realization), said Plato. This talk and mini-workshop is an exploration of:

* what eros and how it is accessed with awareness
* how awakened eros functions to integrate unconscious material and
* how eros catalyzes the subtle energetics of the body.

Conscious BDSM

Sunday June 19 2pm-5pm The Looking Glass Oakland
http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/179121

Location: The Looking Glass This event is for those who are interested in the awakening of consciousness through sexuality, and especially for healers and facilitators working with sexuality or in related fields. Using case studies from her practice and drawing on the experiences of participants, Shakti explains aspects of the body’s sexual bio-energetics.

Our existing ego structure - that which binds us to the perception of who we think we are - consists of polarities. Freedom comes through integrating these polarities. One extreme, but highly effective way of catalyzing this integration is through full immersion in one or the other side of a polarity.

Sky Dancing for Women

June 20 / 10am-6pm / Oakland (RSVP required) Cost $160
http://womenskydancing.eventbrite.com/

dance woman 2.jpg

Skydancing is what happens when a woman drops into the full bliss of her sexual womanhood. Women's sexuality is a powerful gateway to liberation, and yet on that is not much understood in our world. Our sexuality has been conditioned to be masculine rather than feminine. Not that men want it so. In fact, man's deepest yearning is for woman to step into the fullness of her feminine sexuality.

Skydancing is an essential expression of the wild woman in all of us. When our energy is freed up, it awakens in the yoni (vagina) and spirals up through the body, taking us into an ecstatic dance of letting-go. This teaching from woman to woman takes some doing in our current western mindset. Women have been brought up to believe that most or all of their sexual expression is wrong and must only be presented in an acceptable way according to the culture.

The purpose of this workshop is to guide women into the opening, release and receptivity that turns our sexuality into a force of awakening. Some themes that may be covered in this workshop (depending on the requirements of the group):

* Awakening sexual energy
* Opening to desire
* Directing sexual energy
* The essential qualities of the feminine
* Sexuality, belonging and relationships
* Virgin, whore, women’s union
* Listening to yoni
* Connecting heart and sex

The methods we use are breathwork, subtle movement, dancing, conversation and enactment.
As this energy is very alive in my body, I am able to transmit it to the women in the group. This transmission is one of the key methods that makes this workshop so powerful.

No nakedness is required and no direct sexual contact with others. It is entirely possible to wake up the beauty and power of your own sexuality through dropping into the bliss of your own experience - which is what we will be doing on this workshop.

BLISS DANCE

Monday June 20th (Oakland) and Friday June 24th (Fairfax) / 7pm-10pm / $10 advance, $15 at door

About BlissDance
Bliss
is the balance that happens
When we fully embrace
Both our shadow and our light
And come to rest
In love

Blissdance is an expression of Tantra, the art of integrating the sacred and sexual, and using this as a force for awakening. In a Blissdance session, you explore your inner and outer worlds through movement and stillness, music and silence. The dance is free and not stylized, though guided by me through the progression of a theme. I introduce the dance, show you how I interpret it, and then you find our own response.

Blissdance draws on the wisdom of Biodanza and various other dance, movement and meditation traditions.

One of the first principles of Tantra is presence – being present in the here and now, in your body, in your senses. Another is the connection between our passion, our sexuality and our hearts. Blissdance is a space where you can come rest into the simple beauty of moving in a body, with other bodies, in the dance of life.

As this happens, you get to experience and confront some of the patterns that keep us from being intimate with life:

Body armoring: We hold our bodies rigid in an attempt to protect ourselves from feeling too much - or feeling what we have been suppressing. Sometimes that is laughter or ecstasy, sometimes that is sadness. fear or anger. All these states are welcome in the dance.

Associations: Over a lifetime of suppessions, we have started to build up meaning through associations. When someone touches you, what does it mean to you? When you enjoy the touch, what fears come up? Do they relate to past experiences or future projections? In BlissDance, these subconscious processes will become conscious for you. In awareness lies the liberation.

One of the keys of BlissDance is that the dance moves you out of your habits and stuck ways. We act out some of the drama's of everyday life - like having a couple's fight - but do that in a conscious way, as a celebration of the body, and as an act of freedom. In doing that, something gives way, more space gets created, and we can celebrate our freedom more. Sometimes I use ancient shamanic techniques to help shake up the nervous system so that you can slip into this moment with no mind. Sometimes we dance wild and crazy with little structure and limitation, to let that energy be expressed and accessed in the body. Eventually, as Rumi says:

something opens up
I taste only sacredness

The moment softens. We get to feel everything intimately. We welcome what is, no longer resist, and in that we can meet the beloved, in the dance, in this moment. In the first place, that beloved is my very own being. Then I can meet him/her in the other, the group, my life, existence.

BlissDance is for those who are yearning for presence, freedom and truth. It is for the brave spiritual warriors who are not scared to dance their ridiculousness and to let their vulnerability be felt in the dance as well.

All it takes is a little willingness. The music, the facilitation and the group will carry you along into what you really want: A deep opening into this present precious moment.

BELOVED: a Tantric workshop on The Reality of Love and Relationship

Saturday June 25 10am-8pm
Open Secrets Bookstore San Rafael, Ca

http://belovedshakti.eventbrite.com/

Workshop objective

In our collective psyches the dream of finding the Soulmate moves strongly - that 'other' who will meet and fulfill me completely. And yes, there is a real soulmate for each one of us. But that person is inside. Inside ourselves we are both masculine and feminine. The lovers and loved ones that cross our paths are our mirrors for where we are in the inner relationship between male and female. They can also be a rich fulfillment - and embodiment - of our inner Soulmate.

The split between masculine and feminine in us is a primary polarity. A central aim of Tantra is the integration of this polarity. With that comes an experience of who you really are, in all your rich diversity. Paradoxically, as we embrace our inner Soulmate, a new fruitfulness becomes possible in our outer relationships.

Aims of meeting the Beloved within

It is possible to get intimately acquainted with your inner beloved. In this workshop we will do so through

Guided drum journey
Gestalt role-play
Breathwork and
BlissDance - awakening the senses within your own body

Tantric Orgasm: Building Sexual Energy

Sunday June 26th, 10am to 6pm Fairfax cost $95 to $125
http://tantricorgasm.eventbrite.com/

Orgasm - that great moment when we all let go into infinite space and into the warmth of the open heart. Sadly, for most men on the face of the earth, orgasm is a very short-lived affair, and for many women, an elusive experience. This workshop is an opportunity to radically change your perception of what orgasm is, and to open to a whole new relationship to it.

Through discussion, breathwork and movement, I will introduce you to Tantric orgasm: a full-body awakening of orgasmic energy rippling up through your body that takes you way beyond your limited perception of self. This experience, which is also known as kundalini orgasm, is like riding the waves of pleasure, and it can continue for 8 hours - or 3 days.

The question is: How much bliss can you stand?

This workshop is an introduction to the sexual meditation of Tantra. Tantric practitioners are interested in building sexual energy and supporting the flow of this energy through the whole body as a force for awakening and pure, blissful presence. The workshop will give you a taste of some of the basic techniques and approaches we use. Some themes to be covered:

  • Genital sex versus spiritual sex
  • Sex up the chakras
  • Techniques for raising sexual energy
  • Clearing blocks in the flow of sexual energy

What is Totality Therapy?

Totality Therapy is a contemporary, streamlined interpretation of the ancient wisdom of Advait Tantra. Totality Therapy uses the method of total immersion in experience while evoking a strong witness. Through deeply experiencing primary polarities such as fear and desire, good and bad, masculine and feminine, you get to break through the polarized gridlocks of your existing ego structure. Totality Therapy are for people who are serious about waking up – this lifetime. This workshop is suitable for any seeker, but particularly also for practitioners who would like to be exposed to this method. For full details see totalitytherapy.com

How does it work?

Totality Therapy works as follows:

· The aim is greater awareness and presence, even if the road seems to go into unhappiness, disintegration and apparent madness.

· No expression of the person’s being is excluded – mental, emotional, physical, sexual, subtle energetic and spiritual facets are met directly as they present themselves.

· The practitioner is involved with her whole being while maintaining a state of heightened awareness. Thus no boundaries are needed and the client is encouraged to embody his/her life with totality.

Workshop aim

The aim of this workshop is to give you an experiential introduction to the seven basic methods of Totality Therapy:

1. Lifting taboos and suppressions (facing fears)
2. Embracing fantasies and desires
3. Integrating polarities
4. Expanding heart capacity
5. Developing presence in the body
6. Male-female integration
7. Meditation in the moment

Erotic and Beyond
Tantra Foundation Course
Eight evenings September - November 2011
7 - 11pm
Fish Hoek Cape Town

http://rolfgross.dreamhosters.com/India-Web/1989KhajurahoTantricEmbarrassedDakini.jpg

Course objective

This course is a first and powerful step towards the freedom that Tantra offers as a practice. It requires of you to embrace both your fears and your desires in the realm of the erotic, and to feel the feelings that emerge from here. You will be taught techniques to process the emotional and mental patters that arise from the practice. The course can offer powerful release and healing from old experiences and expectations around sexuality. Expert facilitation will ensure that the course meets each individual where they are at.

This course is a prerequisite for the level 3 Tantra course that will follow after Erotic and Beyond; see below.

Aims of the Tantra Foundation Course

Aim 1: Lifting taboos and suppression

In the days when Tantra was only practiced as a secret mystery tradition, one of the first steps that a new initiate had to take was to break their cultural taboos. If you were raised a Jain Hindu, you would be asked to eat meat and drink alcohol – both of which are highly taboo in that culture. Breaking your personal or cultural taboos asks of you to face your biggest fears. In this course, we will engage our personal and collective taboos in a fun but challenging way.

Suppressions are all experiences that have become unconscious in you. Most often, these were experiences that were unpleasant or frightening to you in the past – emotionally, physically or spiritually. What we are not able or willing to feel completely in the moment, becomes trapped in the body as unconscious patterns that influence everything – especially our sexuality. We will work gently at touching these places and allowing full consciousness to return.

Aim 2: Embracing fantasies and desires

By paying attention to what you desires and fantasies are, you can integrate unconscious or hidden aspects of your being. Whereas lifting taboos and suppressions is about facing your fears, this aim is about saying yes to your desires. One of our dictums in Tantra is: How much bliss can you stand? Since many of us have been raised in traditions of religious austerity, it takes some individuation to embrace pleasure as a gateway to higher understanding.

We will encourage this individuation by exploring your fantasies and desires and giving space for them to be expressed in appropriate ways.

Aim 3: Integrating polarities

One main reason why we stay stuck in limited beliefs about ourselves is that our ego structures are bound up in polarity. Polarities split experience into opposites – what is desired and what is feared, what attracts us and what we are repulsed by, what we see as good and what as evil. These polarities are mostly unconscious in us, and as with fears and desires, they govern and direct our lives.

To go deeper in awareness of who we really are, it is important to find ways of processing these polarities. On this course, you will be taught tools to identify and integrate the polarities that limit your sense of yourself. In the process, you will develop a witness – the ability to observe the story of your life without taking it so seriously.

Who is the course for?

This course for people who are on a committed quest for greater awareness and presence in their lives, and who want to include their sexuality in this journey. Some previous introductory work with me is recommended. You are also welcome to do the course a second time as most certainly new material will be revealed to you. Please note that place is limited to ten participants, so book soon.

Feedback from participants on previous Erotic and Beyond course

"The Erotic and Beyond Workshop was maximum growth over a short period of time...Shakti is an incredible facilitator...I felt extremely held and supported...her insight is invaluable and so accurate...I would highly recommend trusting the process."

"I don't think anything in adult life has shaken me up more than this course. It forced me to look at stuff that had lived under the carpet for much of my post -pubescent life (and even some stuff from before, if the truth be told). The ongoing effects are still bubbling up in the form of realisations (both minor and major), that are changing and stabilising the way I act, think and feel. That's the serious bit: on the other hand it was more fun than is normally legal...
Be brave: do it!"

"I had an opportunity to recover and experience previously incompletely felt feelings at the core of my life. In the space Shakti creates, of loving awareness and acceptance, I felt it possible to embrace these feelings, feel them fully without shirking from them, and love them back into my whole life, warming them with the fire of my presence, and letting them melt away, leaving me stronger and open and clear. Before the course, difficult feelings would often block me and make me withdraw. Now I sense a greater capacity for feeling, for being with difficult feelings, of experiencing them fully and moving beyond them into new possibilities."

Course fee: R2 800

Tantric Training:
Into the Depths

8 - 13 December 2011
Gecko Creek, Cederberg
Facilitated by Rahasya and Shakti

Tantra Intensive
13 - 16 December 211

Into the Depths is a five day intensive course brought to you by two highly experienced Tantrikas. Tantra is a mystery tradition that includes all aspects of our being, also our sexuality, in the quest for awakening. Tantra has traditionally been seen as the fast path, the most direct route to breaking through illusions and waking up to the truth of who we really are. It is a path for spiritual warriors, fools for the divine, tightroap-walkers into the depths of existence.

Want to come play?

The Facilitators: Rahasya and Shakti

Sw Advait Rahasya is the Director of the Advait Tantraschool of South Africa; see tantraschool.co.za. He is one of the rare few living Tantra masters on the planet today. Rahasya's teachings are a unique contemporary interpretation of the ancient Tantric mystery traditions. His touch is extroadinary and his style of teaching incisive, quirky and compassionate. Shakti Malan is a Dakini and member of the Advait Tantraschool. She has a strong practice in Cape Town and has been teaching internationally in the UK and US. For more on her teaching, see shakti.co.za and totalitytherapy.com

A Training Programme

Tantra is a practical path; it is a set of practices rather than a philosophy or a religion. The teaching reveals itself through personal practice. Whether you come to this event as a facilitator of others or purely for your own journey, our focus remains the same: It is through doing your own inner work that you develop the capacity to support others. The deeper you dive into your own psyche, the more of you becomes present to radiate awareness into the world.

Our focus on this training will be on your personal experience. In addition, we will bring in the meta-perspective of the facilitator, helping you to understand and access the techniques and processes we are using to facilitate your journey.

Who is this training for?

This training is for any committed seekers of truth who are asking the big questions:
Who am I (really?)
What is the truth?
How can I live in unconditional love?

The training is structured in a way that it will deeply serve both those who are coming only for their own personal work and those who wish to insert more of the wisdom of Tantra into their professional practice. We welcome practitioners from all walks of life: conscious sexuality, yoga and meditation teachers, healers, medical practitioners, psychologists and sexologists, body workers, sex workers, leaders, teachers. We are expecting participants from all over South Africa and the world. While partners are welcome to join the training together, you are most welcome to join the programme on your own.

Into the Depths

A central approach of Tantra is to open you to the full depths of your experience. We habitually and continually repress and deny much of the feeling, sensation and emotion that is available to us. Our work and play together will help you to access the depths of your experience that has been denied, and thus to open to the heights of sensation you are capable of.

Themes

Our themes for the training are:

A. Embracing desire and fear

  1. Learning to use your erotic impulse as a way to mine what is in the unconscious
  2. Acquiring practices that assist you to stay present in the fire of your deepest fears and desires
  3. Finding ways to distinguish between association and the real of experience
  4. Getting to know how the nervous system responds when what has been repressed gets accessed
  5. Witnessing, experiencing and learning how to facilitate the nervous system and the emotional body through the re-integration of what has been repressed

B. The Soulmate Within
  1. Making conscious your inner masculine and feminine and the relationship between them
  2. Understanding and practicing right relationship between your inner masculine and feminine
  3. Reclaiming aspects of your inner masculine and feminine that have been projected outward on to significant others
  4. Exploring the real of love, fidelity, trust, commitment and other concepts associated with intimate relationship
